Rally to oppose NorthWestern’s methane-fired polluting plant

Wednesday, August 16th from 12:15 pm-1:00 pm

217 N 27th St, Billings, MT, 59101

For years now, Northern Plains members have been standing up for energy customers and Laurel residents by opposing NorthWestern Energy’s reckless methane-fired power plant. If completed, the $275 million project currently being built along the Yellowstone River in Laurel will increase our bills even higher than the nearly 30% rate hike NorthWestern is currently seeking. Worse yet, the dozens of tons of carcinogenic pollution the plant will emit each year will pose health and safety dangers for Laurel residents, those living downwind in Billings, and all who recreate on the Yellowstone nearby.

Because NorthWestern Energy has intentionally avoided funding structures and construction sites that require public comment, we have not had many opportunities to let decision-makers know how strongly we oppose this expensive and dangerous project.  This is why we need to show up in force on August 16th to show NorthWestern Energy, the media, and decision-makers that Montanans DO NOT WANT this expensive, polluting plant! There are two opportunities to take action:

Rally to oppose NorthWestern’s methane-fired polluting plant

Wednesday, August 16th
12:15 pm – 1:00 pm
Courthouse Lawn
Billings, MT

About the hearing:

The purpose of this hearing is to determine what government body has jurisdiction over the plant’s zoning permits. NorthWestern has blatantly and knowingly ignored our laws by building this plant on land zoned strictly for agricultural use. To seek legal compliance before the plant could become operational, a judge must determine if Yellowstone County or the City of Laurel has the authority to enforce zoning laws or changes.

The result of this ruling could have a big impact on future decisions related to NorthWestern Energy’s methane fired power plant, and to citizens’ ability to have a say in these important decisions that impact our lives. Equally important, however, is showing visible opposition to this plant at a time when the press and decision-makers are watching.

NOTE: WE will not have the opportunity to testify at the hearing, but a packed courtroom is EXTREMELY important  to show NorthWestern Energy, the media, and decision-makers that Montanans DO NOT WANT this expensive, polluting plant. Additionally, we’re asking that any rally materials be left outside the courtroom and that we save our rallying behavior for the rally itself.

We hope you’ll join us to fight for the clean, affordable energy future Montanans want and deserve!
