Beartooth Alliance

Beartooth Alliance – based in the Cooke City area of Montana – brings people who love this region together to find ways to protect and enhance our unique mountain environment.

Our Mission

Beartooth alliance is a non-partisan organization of citizens who are committed to influencing environmental and social issue affecting their quality of life. By anticipating problems, providing information and directing its resources, the Alliance can ensure the welfare and vitality of the area.

Issues We Work On

Reclamation

The Old World Mining district left damaging marks in our community, but through a lot of hard work we ensured the full reclamation of the McLaren tailings pond. We also continue to oppose additional mining surrounding Yellowstone National Park.

Restoring Native Fisheries

Beartooth Alliance is actively supporting the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks department in clearing Soda Butte Creek of non-native brook trout and restoring native Yellowstone cutthroat to the region.

Bear Awareness

Beartooth Alliance has donated bear cans to Cooke City and Silver Gate businesses and is also helping local residents order bear cans at an affordable price. Keeping residents and visitors bear safe keeps our wildlife safe too.

History and Accomplishments

  • Stopped the New World Gold Mine and Tintina from developing minerals above Cooke City.

  • Ensured the full clean-up of the McLaren tailings, and the creation of a restored park outside of Cooke-City atop those tailings.

  • Bear Awareness education, signage, and equipment in Cooke City and Silver Gate.

  • Oversaw and helped with the safe removal of brook trout from Soda Butte Creek, and restoration of native fish.
