BILLINGS – A federal judge will hear arguments in Billings Friday in a lawsuit over the proposed expansion of the Spring Creek Coal Mine in southeastern Montana.

The suit challenges the U.S. Interior Department/s approval of expanded mining at Montana’s largest coal mine.

Two Billings based citizen groups, the Northern Plains Resource Council and the Western Organization of Resource Councils, contend the Interior Secretary approved expanded mining of publicly owned coal without first considering the mine’s failure to reclaim land and water.

The Spring Creek Mine, the nation’s 7th largest coal mine, is owned by Cloud Peak Energy.

Oral arguments in the case are set to begin Friday at 10 a.m. in the James F. Battin Federal Courthouse.
