I second Jennifer Sieike’s letter about Energy Corporation of America’s plans to “Bakkenize” the Beartooth Front as being rooted in greed. John Mork, the CEO of Energy Corp, is a billionaire who wants to make even more money for himself, his colleagues and shareholders by industrializing a landscape that people like me are building a future upon. And he’ll do so even if that means potentially ruining the aquifer we rely on and trampling the lands we admire.

It’s this greed that has pushed energy companies to drill everywhere it’s legally and technologically possible. If there’s money to be made, they’ll try, despite knowing that their products are cooking the atmosphere, polluting water and affecting people’s lives throughout the nation. “Jobs,” they say, as their solution to everything. “We’re creating good-paying jobs for hardworking Americans.” Case closed.

This isn’t really about hardworking Americans, it’s about the investors and the CEOs who want to get richer by expanding their empires instead of doing what’s right. Keeping Americans addicted to fossil fuels rather than seeking sustainable alternatives is not patriotic. Helping to cook and pollute the planet rather than protect it for our kids is not an American value.

I have great respect for the honest family man working the rigs, but I wonder if he’d care that much if he was making the same wage installing wind turbines or solar panels. I do, however, know that his boss would be a lot less rich.
