It’s time to bring back Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL)! Consumers deserve the right to know where their meat is from, and ranchers deserve the right to an honest market.
The American Beef Labeling Act (S. 2716), introduced by Senators Tester (MT), Thune (SD), Booker (NJ), and Rounds (SD), is gaining momentum! Northern Plains has been fighting to reinstate mandatory COOL for decades, and the American Beef Labeling Act is the real deal. This bill has bipartisan support (5 Republicans and 5 Democrats have co-sponsored) and would prevent deceptive practices which allows foreign beef to be labeled “Product of the USA.”
Mandatory COOL used to be the law of the land until the World Trade Organization (WTO) bullied the U.S. Congress into repealing it. The American Beef Labeling Act addresses this concern by directing the U.S. Trade Representative and the Secretary of Agriculture to negotiate new terms for COOL within the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (NAFTA 2.0). If negotiations are not reached within one year, COOL goes into effect.
However, we won’t get mandatory COOL reinstated through the Senate without more cosponsors, and that’s why we are taking action this week!
Senator Daines has yet to co-sponsor this important bill, and given his recent outspoken support for family ranchers, we think it’s time for him to support mandatory COOL.
