Luncheon and Soil Crawl at XX Bar Farm and Ranch

Every year during the first week of April we celebrate Montana Soil Health Week and every Wednesday of that week we celebrate Montana Soil Health Day. These events help raise awareness about the importance of soil stewardship while honoring Montana’s agricultural producers and celebrating the importance of agriculture in Montana’s culture, history, and economy.

To celebrate, join us for a FREE locally sourced luncheon and soil crawl at beautiful XX Bar Farm & Ranch, in the Helena Valley on Friday, April 5!

Meet XX Bar’s owner Tim Dusenberry, as well as other innovative producers, educators, and agronomists like Dr. Hartshorn from the MSU Soil Integration Lab, who will be on hand to answer questions. This event will showcase the practices and principles that generate healthy soil, resilient systems, and good food!

Building soil health is different everywhere depending on a property’s existing soils, history, and microclimate. “Soil Crawls,” are public events where we gather to explore the soil health on our members’ ranches and farms to learn what we could do to improve its resiliency, productivity, and microbial activity.

The Dusenberrys will share their story of transforming the family’s irrigated hay fields into lush, rotationally-grazed paddocks that sustain the livestock they sell directly to consumers.

“We used to sell a lot of hay, but now we prefer keeping the nutrients on the operation. That’s what builds our soil and supports the grass we graze our animals on,” says Tim. You can see more about their story here.

Participants will enjoy a locally sourced meal and discuss strategies for soil restoration and community building. Then participants will visit a few soil sample sites around XX Bar with Dr. Hartshorn.
